What's in a name?

Remember grade 5? Doodling your name and his...Mrs. R. Schroeder...Dolly Palmer-Schroeder
Now's the time to decide. Keep it, blend it, hyphenate it or change it?

"I kept my maiden name. I was going through an 'I am woman' phase and my partner didn't object. When we had our first child, I was still committed to my 'own' name until about the 8th time I took our son to a playgroup or the Dr. and had to explain that his father and I were and are married. It surprised me that people even ask, but ask they do.
I quietly hyphenated and now people ask if it's my second marriage :-)"
                                                          Angela C. (8 yrs. married)

"I am taking my fiancee's name. I can't wait to be Mrs. Donato and I didn't even think of keeping my own name. We're hoping to have kids in a few years and I think if I keep my name, it'll just confuse them."
Meghan O. (will be married June/99)

If you're taking your fiancee's name, or if you're hyphenating names, don't forget to do the necessary paperwork! You only have so long to change your drivers licence, social security or tax forms and you'll have to let your human resources people at work know. The checklist will differ from state to state and country to country but here are some to keep in mind.
