License
to Love
You have
to follow the rules of your state/province if you're going to make it legal.
The next
page has guide to what you need to wed in any state or province but here
are the basics.
There
are restrictions in certain states, provinces and counties around where
the license can be used. In some cases, it is only good in the issuing
county. Licenses also have expiry dates and some have waiting periods.
Make sure you check the rules for the state or province you'll be married
in. Also, it's best if both the bride and groom to be go to pick up the
license, in many cases it's necessary but it's also a good excuse to take
some time to yourselves before the big day.
What will
you need?
-
Identification
- it doesn't matter where you marry, you'll need valid proof of age and
more than likely you'll need more than 1 piece of I.D. If one of you is
under 18 you'll also likely need a notarized letter of consent or your
parents accompanying you to pick up the license.
-
If you've been
divorced, you'll need the date and place of your divorce and proof that
it took place. If you are widowed, it's wise to take the death certificate
for proof.
-
A blood test
is required in Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana (bride only), Massachusetts,
Michigan, Mississippi, Montana (bride only), Oklahoma and Washington D.C.
Don't forget
you'll need to arrange for the one or two witnesses who'll sign the license
after the ceremony. (check local requirements)
