The Shop Around the Corner

I live in a small town with one cake shop!   Not much help to someone trying to put a wedding cake story together for an online magazine. However, what I found out was that you should look for your cake in the most ordinary of places. No matter what size of city or town that you live in, there will be at least one person that will be able to create your culinary masterpiece. Ask around.

In my hometown, I checked out the most prominent photographer and asked her who made the most creative cakes. I was surprised to find that it wasn't our cakeshop at all, but a local cafe named Tazzi's.

Proprietor, Nina Pucci Dumanski,  was a wealth of information.  She only makes a few cakes a year, but each one is a masterpiece.  Nina takes the time to sit down with her clients and listen to them.  Something the average shopkeeper might not take the time to do.  She reads all the bridal magazines and can recreate all of the cakes that you might find contained within them.  For example, a recent client brought in a picture straight from the pages of "Martha Stewart Living" and Nina created an exact replica.

Nina's true expertise, however, lies in her own creations. One of her patrons had a "weddingmoon" in Mexico.  When the happy couple returned they hosted a reception for their friends and families.  The couple wanted the cake to be the centerpiece of their reception, and wanted to incorporate the shells that they had collected on their honeymoon. Nina's cake was adorned with the shells and strings of pearls.  She also decorated the table that the cake would sit on with sand, large shells and colorful glass fish. This  kind of attention to detail is what makes Nina's cakes truly one-of-a- kind creations!
